Mural Project commissioned by Twitter NYC & Twitter Alas for their private NYC HQ as part of an ongoing rotating art exhibition titled Wall for a Cause. Murals dedicated to social causes brought to life by local artists.
As part of the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, they asked that I convey what I believed to be the Latinx experience within NYC as someone who grew up within this community. Although we all come from many backgrounds and upbringings, one thing we have in common as children of immigrants is that we have developed this odd self-awareness about our ethical and cultural identity. You’re neither here nor there, but a blend of the two, never truly belonging to either, but existing in the in-between. This is how I interpret the New York City Latin experience and is how I chose to approach this project. The result is a collage of illustrations that intertextualize iconic areas of New York City with aspects of Latinx culture to demonstrate how the Latinx community within NYC differs from the respective countries we all hail from. We by no means lose our heritage, however, it does become intertwined with the NYC lifestyle and creates a new life of its own.
